According to new reports for Arsenal Blogs readers, Arsenal are said to be interested in signing Jean-Philippe Gbamin after failing to sign the £40m-rated Mainz 05 defender last summer.
The defender came through the youth ranks at Lens before he joined Mainz in 2016 and he’s developed in to one of the most promising young defenders in German football over the past two-and-a-half years.
Gbamin’s potential attracted interest from the Gunners with the Daily Mirror claiming the North London club manager Unai Emery saw a failed bid to sign the defender rejected last summer as he looked to improve the defence he took over from Arsene Wenger.
Sokratis joined Arsenal from Borussia Dortmund but our defence has still continued to be a total disaster this season. So far this season, our defence have conceded 37 goals in 26 Premier League fixtures so far having just kept just 4 clean sheets.
With Laurent Koscielny coming towards the end of his career, Arsenal have Rob Holding as a replacement but the youngster is facing a long road to recovery from a serious knee injury and doubts continuing Shkodran Mustafi, Emery is expected to be in the market for another centre-back this summer.
That said, it looks like Emery will consider renewing his interest to sign Gbamin as the Daily Mirror claims the Gunners are continuing to monitor the defender’s progress and will launch another move to sign him at the end of the season.
However, it’s not going to be easy to hijack the defender away from Mainz as the German club rejected the defender exit from the club last summer and the newspaper says they’ll demand around £40m for his signature this time around.
