Deal Close: Arsenal eyeing move for a new £90,000-a-week midfielder this summer

Arsenal are reportedly one step closer to reaching agreement to sign Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos this summer, according to report from Germany. The Greece international is being touted to face the exit door at Dortmund in the coming weeks with the BvB having already shown interest in Mainz's Abdou Diallo as the Greek replacement.

According to German news outlet SportBild, the outlet claim Arsenal are closing on an agreement with Dortmund over the signing of the £90,000-a-week midfielder as they plan to discuss the possibility of a two-year contract with his representative.

The report adds further that the Bundesliga club are likely to request a £17.5m fee for the Greek defender and this fee will be used in their pursuit of Diallo, who is currently valued at £22m. Performance in the heart of defence was a major concern for Arsenal over the course of 2017/18 season which has seen the club ended their season with the worst ever league defensive record in over three decades.

As such, with Arsene Wenger departing, the club's hierarchy are expected to work hand-to-hand with who ever comes in and takes over the reins from Wenger. Arsenal's need for a new centre-back increased after Laurent Koscielny suffered a long-term Achilles injury this month.

Sokratis, however, has been with Dortmund since the summer of 2013 but his stance on not renewing his contract beyond the summer of 2019 has supposedly the club consider shipping him out this summer. Arsenal, despite being the current bookmakers' favourite to sign the Greek star this summer, it's being reported that Manchester United are also keen on his acquisition but Arsenal have an upper hand race under the influence of Sven Mislintat.

Mislintat, a former chief scout for Dortmund, has been working as Arsenal head of recruitment since November last year and the German is understood to have played a key role in Arsenal signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan to the club in January. It's also said that the German also saw the signing of young Greek defender Konstantinos Mavropanos from PAS Giannina during the winter transfer window and the initial impressions of the centre-back were impressive under Wenger towards the end of the season.
