Per Mertesacker's (£35.4m-rated) replacement next transfer plan for Arsenal?

Arsenal are reportedly ready to launch a £35.4m bid to sign Juventus centre-back Daniele Rugani but could face strong competition from Manchester United, according to a report in the Daily Mirror.

The Italian has emerged as one of the hottest young centre-back's in Italian football since he joined Juve as a teenager and he enjoyed a hugely successful two-year loan spell at Empoli between 2013 and 2015.

However, the 23-year-old has struggled to hold down a regular first team football under Max Allegri since returning to Juventus and he hasn't played for the Turin giants since late November.

It seems his situation has alerted teams in the Premier League as the Daily Mirror are citing reports coming from Italy that claim the Gunners are ready to the Serie A's side resolve with a £35.4m bid this winter.

The North London club have long been liked with Rugani and it seems Arsene Wenger is ready to make his interest official as he looks to stregnthen his side's leaky defence - which has once again undermined any title hopes this season.

With Per Mertesacker set to retire at the end of the end of the season, Wenger needs to find a long-term replacement and Rugani would be an excellent signing if the north Londoners could pull it off.
