Arsenal leading the race to sign £30m-rated

Chelsea and Arsenal are reportedly considering a January transfer swoop for Burnley star James Tarkowski, according to reports from Metro. The two London giants are desperate to strengthen their defence in the coming transfer month and have been linked with several options. Tarkowski has been impressive at the back for the high-flying Burnley side and easily replaced Michael Keane, who left for Everton in the summer.

The two clubs are also said to be linked with a move for Southampton's Virgil van Dijk, but the centre-back seems bound for either Liverpool or Manchester City. The Daily Star claim Tarkowski has been marked as the best alternative and Burnley could stand to make a serious profit.

The 25-year-old cost the Clarets just £3.6million earlier this year, but he is now rated around £30m mark. Arsene Wenger has been chasing several defenders with Jonny Evans also being considered a possible signing alongside Chelsea's David Luiz. The Burnley's defender and his side sit in seventh position in the Premier League ranking, just two points off a spot in Europe and have been hailed as the season’s surprise package.

Burnley's boss Sean Dyche does not want to see his team teared apart in the January window and Tarkowski is unconcerned with rumours around his future. The defender has made no indication he does not want to leave Burnley and is committed to his Burnley team-mates. He's currently out of the team due to a three-match ban and will miss Burnley clash against Manchester United on Boxing Day as a result of that. Manchester City are also believed to be in the race to the sign Tarkowski, but it Arsenal who are prime to complete the signing of the Englishman.
