Report: Arsenal have been alerted to the availability of £40m-rated Joao Mario

Joao Mario is reportedly available for transfer by Serie A giants Inter Milan, with Arsenal reportedly eyeing a surprise move for the midfielder during the January transfer window.

The Portuguese international only joined the San Siro outfits 18 months ago in a £40m deal from Portuguese side Sporting CP, but has found first team football with the Nerrazurri's challenging.

Italian football rumour mongers Tuttosport reports Inter are willing to accept a cut-off price of £26m for the 24-year-old midfielder, who is no longer in Luciano Spalletti's plans after the club's brilliant start to this season Serie A campaign.

They remain unbeaten and second, two points adrift of current leaders Napoli.

Mario, who was part of the Portuguese squad that won the 2016 UEFA Euro Competition has made a total of 39 appearances for Inter, but managed just three starts in Serie A this season. It is understood Mario would consider a move to England in order to get enough playing game time.

Portugal have secured a spot for next summer's World Cup in Russia and Mario recognises he needs to be playing regularly and at a high competitive league to prove to national coach Fernando Santos he deserves to be part of Portugal's final squad.
